World premieres of the Chamber Music version of La Mer by Debussy and Helder's newest piece Spring Rain

09 November 2016

L'Orchestre de Radio France will premiere Helder's new version of La Mer by Debussy. A commission Radio France gave Helder last year. One of the most beautiful orchestral pieces in history was rewritten for single winds and strings, percussion and harp.

In the same program, Helder's newest piece Spring Rain (based on a poem by Sara Teasdale) will be premiered as well.

The concert will take place in the auditorium of Maison de la Radio France. For tickets and more information, please click here.

15 March 2012

Mahler’s unfinished Piano Quartet in A minor shows the eminent early skill of the 16 year old: late romantic characteristics, eager gestures and a longing tone. It’s no wonder that the opening motive was featured in a central scene of Martin Scorsese’s film “Shutter Island”.

The Dutch pianist and composer Marlijn Helder recognised the orchestral potential of the work and has now created an arrangement which orients itself on Mahler’s own orchestral sound (comparable to Luciano Berio’s orchestration of the early Mahler songs), while at the same time including Helder’s own ideas for the work.

A score for perusal is now available. The world première of the new version will take place on 10 May 2013 in Rotterdam. James Gaffigan conducts the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra.
